With Cracks in the Silence, drummer and composer Jonas Sorgenfrei releases his fifth album as a bandleader – and at the same time his most versatile work to date. For the first time, his music will also be available on vinyl: the A and B sides unfold like two contrasting sonic worlds, a kaleidoscope of sounds, ensembles and moods that together form a deeply personal panorama of his recent years.

The recordings cover a wide spectrum – from intimate solo, duo and trio moments to lyrical quartet settings and powerful quintet pieces.

Some works are newly composed, while others have been reworked specifically for this album, including compositions originally created for the German Human Rights Film Award. Older pieces also return in a fresh guise. It is precisely in this diversity that a common thread emerges: breaking the silence, revealing fine cracks through which new perspectives can be heard.

The second half of the album in particular opens up new spaces: here, Sorgenfrei integrates live electronics into his drumming for the very first time – a sound world he has explored intensively in recent years and now weaves organically into the texture of his own band.

He is joined by his long-standing musical companions Florian Trübsbach, Rainer Böhm, Philipp Brämswig, Matthias Akeo Nowak and Wanja Slavin, who have shaped the continuity and energy of his ensembles for more than five years.

Thus, Cracks in the Silence is not only an artistic stocktaking, but also a kind of family portrait of a band that carries its sound forward together while constantly reinventing itself. Following Elephants Marching On (2021), Moods (2022), and the live albums Live (2023) and Live Quintet (2025), Jonas Sorgenfrei here presents another side of his work: not a closed soundscape, but a multifaceted mosaic.

An album that embraces contrasts, explores new paths, and continually balances structure with freedom, introspection with collective energy.
